Interview -2Cents- Adam O'Rourke

By Deb Rao

2Cent is a heavy rock band  from Los Angeles and has a sound  reminiscent of Pantera. 2Cents are currently on The Jagermeister Tour with Korn. The band has just released “Dress To Kill” on Eight O'Five Records with new single "Get What" hitting the Active Radio Charts and receiving nationwide attention.

2Cents features Adam O’Rourke (lead vocals, drums) and Dave O’Rourke (guitar, vocals), and Adair Cobley (guitar) and Jason Wendell (bass), Rockmusicstar.com recently spoke to drummer/singer Adam O'Rourke regarding the current tour slated to  hit Hampton Beach Casino on Friday night May 7th and new release Dress To Kill.

RMS: Adam, How is The Jagermeister Tour going? Is the band performing in Kentucky tonight?

ADAM: Actually, the show got rescheduled tonight. We got the day off tonight. Our next show is in Utica on Thursday. Actually, we just played our second show. We like to start off with a bang. When I was loading onstage last night a metal corner of the speaker came down from the PA and split my head open. This was when the doors opened when we were just back lining our gear. I needed to go to the hospital and get a bunch of stitches put in my head. But I couldn't go because if I went to the hospital and got the stitches put in my head I would have missed our set time. So I just kind of poured some super glue in it and pushed it together and waited an hour and went and played the show. I got through the whole show with a lot of blood. Then I got offstage and went and got myself taken care of and was back in enough time to hang with the kids at the end of the show and sign some stuff.

RMS: You give new meaning to the show must go on. Hope you are feeling better.

ADAM: I am fine. It is a little sore today. But I will live. I definitely wasn't going to disappoint any fans.

RMS: What is the set list tour? Are you going to play a lot of new material from Dress To Kill?

ADAM: Yes, I think 90 percent of the set list is off of that record. We only throw in one or two favorite tracks from the old record. It really depends on the night and how we are feeling. Certain nights we like to change things up.

RMS: Tell us about the writing process for the new album. Over how long a time period did it take the band to write the album?

ADAM: I would say a few months of going back to the drawing board. We really approached each song with just the attitude that we wanted it to be memorable. It didn't matter what the songs sounded like. The one thing we wanted to have when the CD stopped the songs would still be in your head when it was over.

RMS: Now 2Cents is always on the road. You are kind of like the relentless warriors. How did touring play a major factor in the writing of this album?

ADAM: That is a really good question. Our first record we had a different line-up. We went through that whole run with our first record out and we came back. Our old bass player and guitarist decided it wasn't the life for them. We kind of took all of the experiences we had from being on the road prior; the ups and the downs, the highs and the lows and we kind of worked that in to our songwriting.

RMS: How did you come up with the title, Dress To Kill?

ADAM: Actually, it was funny enough. When we were on our first tour for our first record. I was sitting in the back of the van. I had this image pop in my head of this woman standing naked with a knife behind her back covering her unmentionables and having the idea of having all she needed to kill you. She didn't need any other clothes. The idea and the image were funny and kind of sarcastic. That kind of plays a part in the attitude of the band. From there when I had the album art idea, we started piecing together some of the songs and we decided to take one song and make it the title track. The single is actually "Get What" right now. I believe it has made its way all the way up 25 on the Active Charts, which is something that is one of the coolest things to ever happen to me. We are really excited. The message of the song is a little edgy for radio but it went over pretty well. It is still doing well. We are getting spun Nationwide. I can't complain I got a smile ear to ear.

RMS:  The band also worked with producer Matt Hyde.

ADAM: He is almost like the fifth member of the band. That guy is amazing. He is one of the most talented dudes that I know. He really played a huge part in shaping the sound of the band. Not so much in writing but kind of like just talking at us and encouraging us and saying look this is what should be important to you.

RMS: Were you influenced by Pantera at all? I can hear a lot of that heaviness similar style in your sound.

ADAM: Pantera is my favorite band of all time. They are like my Beatles, That band changed my life forever. I don't know if I would be sitting here if it weren’t for them. For the longest time that is where music begun and ended for me. Pantera are a timeless metal band. To me they played Metal the right way. They had songs. To me metal along the way has turned into a lost art form of shredding as hard as you could shred, screaming as loud as you could scream and being as extreme as you could be. I mean that is all fine and good but at the end of the day it is like when” Walk" starts playing on the CD player you walked around all day singing it. They left you with an idea. They made an impression on you beyond the esthetic sound of being heavy and brutal.

RMS: Also you wrote a song for Dime entitled,” Song For Darrell Abbott". "It is kind of like a tribute to him.

ADAM:  When we heard the news on how he had passed. It was heartbreaking. Even if you are not a fan of the band. To think that someone could get murdered while they are onstage doing what they love is pretty shocking and depressing thing. At that point he had already contributed so my to my life. The only right thing to do is to write something about him.

RMS: What has your favorite tour been so far?

ADAM: That is really hard. We are only in the beginning stages of the Korn Tour. I would say it was a tie between our Canadian run with Korn and our tour with Shadows Fall and Five Finger Death Punch was amazing because all those bands are great dudes. We actually got to share a bus with Shadows Fall. That was so much fun. Those guys became some of our closest friends. Actually, a couple of the dudes are coming out to see us this Friday on the Korn tour at Hampton Casino.
