Buffalo, NY - On December 1st, the sublime Sportmen's Tavern was graced with the powerful presence of Country Western legend, Billy Joe Shaver. The packed crowd of loyal fans came in droves, coming everywhere from Pennsylvania to Toronto, Canada. After all, this is the Texan legend, whose genre defining songs have been covered by everyone from Elvis Presley ("You Asked Me To"), to the great Bob Dylan ("Old Five and Dimers Like Me"), to the The Allman Bros. ("Sweet Mama"), to Johnny Cash ("I'm Just an Old Chunk of Coal").
B.J.S may not be a household name, but he is highly responsible for launching the 'Outlaw Country' genre. Dressed in his traditional, trademarked "Canadian Tuxedo" (aka denim suit), he single handedly (missing half of two fingers) started the foundation and revolutionized the movement. His compositions are regarded as the first true 'Outlaw' records, and seeing him live tells it all.
With a 40 year career and a three piece backup band (one guitarist, bass and drums), every one of his songs were passionately performed. Despite never being an 'accomplished musician,' Shaver's raspy and grittier vocal range demonstrates a true urban cowboy tone, which doesn't come any better, especially in a world dominated by computer corrected pitch control. The hard lived life, humor, redneck drawls and bar room brawls are all staples you'll find in his songs, which he always sings from the heart.
The night of unforgettable twang and authentic natural Texas born talents had many stand out highlights, including his splendid signature number, "Georgia On A Fast Train." An emotionally driven, "I Couldn't Be Me Without You" had turned the honky tonk man into a handkerchief man, thanks to it's sentimental heartfelt poetic lyrics. "Live Forever" perfectly and significantly spread B.J.S's eternal legacy and profound message. Clearly, at 73 years of age, no-one can deny, especially after a full two hour set of timeless C&W music, the superstar status of this legendary song writer and outlaw pioneer.
