Savoy Brown - The Forvm, Amherst NY - Nov. 4, 2011

Review and Photos by Jack Pieri

Buffalo, NY - This past Friday, legendary Blues/Rock band, Savoy Brown, brought the house down at The Forvm Night Club. Just shy of a two hour, blistering blues roots set, the group proved why they're just as relevant as they were way back in 1966, when they first debuted.

"Time Does Tell," while watching founding original member, Kim Simmonds, stay loyal to his true signature style and faithful fans. His powerful playing on lead guitar, is a vital contribution, that helped put British Blues in mainstream America, by presenting the music in a popular, rock and boogie-woogie atmosphere.

The four piece electrifying ensemble, clearly demonstrated why taking a first class musicianship, on a round trip "Train To Nowhere," was worth every beat. This classic nugget from 1968 was indeed the gem highlight of the evening.

Although the small, but overly pleased crowed was treated to blues staples, such as Willie Dickson's "Little Red Rooster," something seemed to be missing. A pair of the group's signature career defining numbers, such as "Tell Mama" and "All I Can Do Is Cry," were absent from the set list. And although the newer songs performed were not as strong as their memorable vintage material, the boys still managed to bring enough smoke stack lightning, and ripping thunder, to an unforgettable night of pure wondrous wang dang doodle!

Before the show's closing number, the audience was wooed by both an occasional hard edged R&B sax, and a stand up bass guitar (WOW!) Clearly, of course, the star of the show was unmistakably Mr. Kim Simmonds (the sole original member of Savoy Brown). With his boisterous finger pickin, and flawless yet fun, style of guitar playing, his multiple hot, sizzling solos left the crowd amazed. Even the late Stevie Ray Vaughan would have been smiling proud.

After hearing the eternal "Hellbound Train" (the grand finale), it's obvious in all music circles why Savoy Brown symbolizes musicianship sorbet. Red, white and 'US Blues' till I die.
